Paranormal Activity

And for my second movie review of the week:

I'm sure you have heard all the hype of this movie through trailers shown on television and on the internet showing the audience's reactions while watching this movie. If you haven't, the trailer is available below. Don't expect Singaporeans to have the same reactions in the theater with our more reserved ways and pride. The most you will hear is whimpering or a scream here and there. This movie follows the same filming style as 'The Blair Witch Project'. However, unlike the 1999 movie, this one has a lot less hand shaking while holding the camera due to the fact that it is propped on a tri-pod during it's night scenes and the audience become voyeurs to the horrors of what the couple can see and cannot see. With the camera angle facing the couples bed, the doorway and the hallway outside, the audience sees more than what the couple is able to see from their angle. The movie is filmed over 21 nights with each night scene being labeled and a time stamp at the bottom right which fast forwards to the scary parts.

This movie was originally made in 2007 and slowly made its way into the theater just recently. Altogether it has 4...yes FOUR..endings. Three were made while filming the original and the fourth was made for the big screen by Steven Spielberg himself. I myself have seen three of the four endings and I can say the one being shown in the theater, although scary, is sort of an anti-climax to the pace of the entire movie.

With the slogan "What happens when you sleep", it should have been "What happens when SHE sleeps" due to the fact that it is one particular demon that has been haunting the woman, Katie, since she was eight years old. Aside from that, it truly is a scary movie..only during the night scenes. The day scenes are boring and draggy and the night scenes are scary but short. Just when things are starting to get exciting, it stops and cuts to the next day. This could work to create anticipation for the movie but also makes it boring at times.

Overall, this movie will scare alot of people and create sleepless nights for many but it did not do it for me. The movie uses the concept of playing with people's imagination of what's around the corner or outside the hallway but after watching 6 seasons of "ghost hunters" on TV, that approach doesn't scare me anymore. Good for one viewing in the theater with a good sound system as the sounds is what makes the movie scary but it does not merit a second viewing as you will already know what will happen.

Rating - 7.5/10

Paranormal Activity

2012

Ok..my old blog is definitely dead cos my life is boring and there's nothing much to talk about so yeah..i've decided to change the objective of this blog to be more of a personal movie review blog since i catch a movie in the theaters at least once a week. Been catching a movie once every week for almost a year now..so might as well do something to remember them all. This week i'll be reviewing two movies..

(Minimal spoilers)

First of:

So I caught this movie on Saturday morning (14/11/09) at 12.30am at Lido Shaw House Hall 1 which is 'the biggest digital hall' in Singapore. I've always been interested in the 2012 phenomena and did research on it way before most of the public knew about it through the movie. There is a lot of of different speculation on how the world is going to "end" in 2012 such as an alien planet passing earth's orbit and causing the earth to stop rotating for three days, solar flares from the sun, aliens coming to destroy us.....it goes on and on.

Anyway, this movie focuses on the solar flare from the sun version of the world ending. Suffice it to say, the movie starts with an ominous tone and builds from there. Even with the knowledge that the world is going to end, it still had me guessing what was going to happen next. How the different characters would react to the different situations around them, although I thought that the protagonist and his family seem to be the luckiest people on earth with everything going their way.

The theater was big, the seats were good and spacious and the sound quality was excellent. My seat literally shook and vibrated with all the destruction going on on screen. That just added to the experience. However, don't go into this movie expecting an excellent story and superb acting. This is an end of the world movie after all so just enjoy the effects and destruction. I have to give credit to two spectacular scenes where John Cusack's character and his family escape the destruction in a limousine and later in a small plane. The movie is unintentionally funny when it tries to be serious and the actors are just pawns to something that is bigger than all of them. Oh yeah, the movie is 2 hrs 30mins so be prepared to go to the toilet before it starts and bring a cushion to sit on.

Overall I would say this movie deserves a watch at least once in the theater for its effects but not worth a second watch.

Rating - 7/10.
